The Team
Daniel Epstein
President
Daniel fundamentally believes that entrepreneurship is the answer to nearly all the issues we face today and has dedicated his life accordingly. By the time he received his BA in philosophy he had already started three ventures. Daniel is the co-founder of two Boulder-based companies: Tuition Specialists, focused on making quality education more affordable and SWAE sports, dedicated to conservation & development through eco-tourism. Furthermore, in the summer of 2008, he co-developed and directed a 5-week institute that brought 17 young, aspiring social entrepreneurs from 14 countries together in Boulder to focus on understanding the global context of the issues we face and to study the skill sets needed to address them. For Daniel, business is not business, business is people. He believes in militant transparency and truthfulness in the projects he is a part of and in his everyday life. And if you can't find Daniel working in a local coffee shop he's likely running along the foothills with the love of his life (his dog Kaya). He also struggles to take himself too seriously (hence the photo).
Teju Ravilochan
VP Partnerships and Communication
Before getting a degree in International Affairs from the University of Colorado, Boulder, Teju received a grant to conduct research on the effectiveness of non-profit organizations in addressing rural poverty. He discovered that organizations relying on charitable approaches to poverty alleviation struggled to make a noticeable impact in the lives of the poor, while organizations that treated the poor as customers and potential entrepreneurs were successfully able to lift many out of poverty. Intrigued by the promise of social entrepreneurship, Teju co-founded The SHARED Element in order to connect India’s rural poor with economic markets through mobile phones. To learn more about how to get a social venture off the ground, Teju began working as Executive Assistant to Paul Polak at D-Rev: Design for the Other 90%, who has used innovative market-based approaches to move over 17 million people out of poverty worldwide. Among Teju's greatest passions are discussing literature, tennis, chess, finding radial pulses, and imagining, though only occasionally executing, hilarious violations of social norms.
Tyler Hartung
VP Finance and Operations
Tyler believes so much in the promise of the world's young social entrepreneurs that he quit a secure job in the worst job market since the Great Depression to work with the Unreasonable Institute. His goal? To find the world's best social entrepreneurs who can align social idealism with business pragmatism. He steadfastly works towards a future where there is no gray area between business profit and social good, where they are not mutually exclusive. He wants to see the sustainable efforts of these social entrepreneurs expand with the velocity that he saw while working at Renewable Choice Energy, a startup that exploded into one of the nation's leading wind energy providers. Tyler built his passion for social entrepreneurship through extensive travel and interactions with changemakers from around the world. His latest excursion was to Uganda to consult for a Microfinance Institution. Tyler received his degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder while studying Finance, Entrepreneurship and Applied Mathematics.
Vladimir Dubovskiy
Creativity Expert
Vladimir believes that we are at a remarkable point in history: we can now align economic interests with social and environmental interests. In order to do so, says Vladimir, we must understand that putting the 20th century's band-aid on today's problems in the form of charity is not going to accomplish this goal. What we must do is harness the forces of capitalism to propel competitive social change. So he started a social enterprise called Greenlighted to provide everyday consumers easy access to information which enables them to vote with their dollars for most socially and environmentally responsible companies. Vlad loves to travel. This past summer he went to India to secure partners and promote Greenlighted and the Unreasonable Institute. Endowed with statistical and technical design skills, he is the mastermind behind our website and social venture marketplace. Two common things you'll hear Vlad say: "Metrics drive behavior" and "Boldness changes everything."
Nikhil Dandavati
Founding Advisor
Nikhil is a co-owner of Tuition Specialists, along with Daniel, and serves as its Chief Financial Officer. Passionate about helping entrepreneurs use finance to develop their businesses, Nikhil developed an early stage venture capital fund two years ago for India’s largest privately-owned bank, ICICI. Last summer, he designed business processes for a startup company in Boulder which created endo-vascular medical devices. Among other tasks, he conducted the market research, identified the financial resources and wrote the business plan. While Nikhil has already been accepted into the University of Colorado’s School of Medicine, he recently rejected the invitation in order to pursue his primary interests in finance and entrepreneurship.
Justin Kang
Associate Director
Justin believes in the fierce urgency of now. So much so that he willingly left his comfort zone of the east coast where he spent nearly his entire life to support the Unreasonable Institute in its mission to provide high-impact entrepreneurs wings. Prior to joining the team at Unreasonable, Justin participated in too many entrepreneurial endeavors focusing on topics such as environmental justice, conflict resolution, global poverty and arts and education. While moonlighting (and at times, succeeding) as an entrepreneur, Justin realized his natural passion in connecting and supporting others in realizing their vision of changing the world. With that in mind, after graduating from Brandeis University, he joined the staff at MassChallenge, a global startup competition designed to help entrepreneurs transform great ideas into great companies. Aside from his involvement with Unreasonable, Justin is an obsessive volunteer for local nonprofits and progressive political campaigns and one day, he hopes to open up a diner but only when all is well with the world.
Etan Brandt-Finell
Unreasonable Chef
Etan will serve as the Master Chef of the Unreasonable Institute this summer. Although he is an exceptional chef, he is not a great writter... we are still waiting on his official bio.
