Who We Are
Daniel Epstein
President
Daniel fundamentally believes that entrepreneurship is the answer to nearly all the issues we face today and has dedicated his life accordingly. By the time he received his BA he had already started three social enterprises. Daniel is the co-founder of two Boulder-based companies: Tuition Specialists, focused on making quality education more affordable and SWAE sports, dedicated to conservation & development through eco-tourism. Furthermore, in the summer of 2008, he co-developed and directed a 5-week institute that brought 17 young, aspiring social entrepreneurs from 14 countries together in Boulder to focus on understanding the global context of the issues we face and to study the skill sets needed to address them. Aside from his entrepreneurial tendencies, Daniel is an educator and has worked to develop and teach curriculum focused on both leadership and entrepreneurship with a number of domestic and international organizations. For Daniel, business is not business, business is people. He believes in militant transparency and truthfulness in the projects he is a part of and in his everyday life.
Teju Ravilochan
Connections Extraordinaire
Before getting a degree in International Affairs from the University of Colorado, Boulder, Teju received a grant to conduct research on the effectiveness of non-profit organizations in addressing rural poverty. He discovered that organizations relying on charitable approaches to poverty alleviation struggled to make a noticeable impact in the lives of the poor, while organizations that treated the poor as customers and potential entrepreneurs were successfully able to lift many out of poverty. Intrigued by the promise of social entrepreneurship, Teju co-founded The SHARED Element in order to connect India’s rural poor with economic markets through mobile phones. To learn more about how to get a social venture off the ground, Teju began working as Executive Assistant to Paul Polak at D-Rev: Design for the Other 90%, who has used innovative market-based approaches to move over 17 million people out of poverty worldwide. Among Teju's greatest passions are discussing literature, tennis, chess, finding radial pulses, and imagining, though only occasionally executing, hilarious violations of social norms.
Vladimir Dubovskiy
Creativity Expert
Vladimir believes that we are at a remarkable point in history: we can now align economic interests with social and environmental interests. In order to do so, says Vladimir, we must understand that putting the 20th century's band-aid on today's problems in the form of charity is not going to accomplish this goal. What we must do is harness the forces of capitalism to propel competitive social change. So he started a social enterprise called Greenlighted to provide everyday consumers easy access to information which enables them to vote with their dollars for most socially and environmentally responsible companies. Vlad loves to travel. This past summer he went to India to secure partners and promote Greenlighted and the Unreasonable Institute. Endowed with statistical and technical design skills, he is the mastermind behind our website and social venture marketplace. Two common things you'll hear Vlad say: "Metrics drive behavior" and "Boldness changes everything."
Tyler Hartung
Community Tactician
Tyler believes so much in the promise of the world's young social entrepreneurs that he quit a secure job in the worst job market since the Great Depression to work with the Unreasonable Institute. His goal? To find the world's best social entrepreneurs who can align social idealism with business pragmatism. He steadfastly works towards a future where there is no gray area between business profit and social good, where they are not mutually exclusive. He wants to see the sustainable efforts of these social entrepreneurs expand with the velocity that he saw while working at Renewable Choice Energy, a startup that exploded into one of the nation's leading wind energy providers. Tyler built his passion for social entrepreneurship through extensive travel and interactions with changemakers from around the world. His latest excursion was to Uganda to consult for a Microfinance Institution. Tyler received his degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder while studying Finance, Entrepreneurship and Applied Mathematics.
