As Bill Gates recognized in his World Food Prize speech, “Three-quarters of the world’s poorest people get their food and income by farming small plots of land. Helping the poorest small- holder farmers grow more crops and get them to market is the most powerful lever for reducing hunger and poverty.” Liga Masiva works directly with farm communities to connect them to a new trade system. Liga Masiva’s partnership with the farmers allows them higher income, access to best practices from other farm communities, and ongoing support with coffee and community projects. Its organic coffee growers in the Dominican Republic have said, “this system is important to me because there are no middlemen– so the producers benefit more.”
